The year’s biggest label show has finally arrived. Companies large and small will arrive in Brussels to showcase their latest products at Labelexpo Europe, which takes place September 24-27. Digital inkjet printing will play a prominent role, as will automation. Many label printers will seriously explore digital printing for the first time. Others will look to double down on the technology, or even consider expanding into hybrid printing. Such is the case with Info Label, Inc., the focus of this month’s Narrow Web Profile. Info Label, an early digital adopter, invested in a Gallus Labelfire hybrid press in 2016 and has recently recommitted to HP by installing a new HP Indigo 8000 digital press.

Flexible packaging and an assortment of finishing techniques will also dominate the event’s wide halls. As suppliers strive to take the guesswork out of printing, automating many daily tasks will help attract the next generation workforce–many of whom might be making their first foray into labels and packaging at the show. This year’s Labelexpo will look a little different, though. One won’t have to look far as to why, starting with the author of this editorial. L&NW editor Steve Katz, or “Label Steve” as he’s affectionately known to so many in the industry, will be sitting this one out as he recovers from a broken neck sustained in a car accident. While he’s on the mend, the long flight and arduous requirements of the event will not permit him to attend, even though he will be there in thought.

Steve’s absence has made me realize what a valuable role he fills as both a mentor and friend. He knows all the ins and outs of the industry. Having spent time with him walking the show floor of many a tradeshow, we’d be hard-pressed to go more than two or three booths without someone enthusiastically stopping him to say hello. He has not been shy about imparting his wisdom to me, either, which is greatly appreciated.

Both he and I have received an outpouring of support in the past two months, which serves as a reminder of how many great people with whom we come into contact on a daily basis. Regardless if it’s a printer who needs help with an ink or anilox roll, or an associate editor who needs advice for a story, there are people eager and willing to lend their expertise. Steve embodies those qualities, and he will be greatly missed at Labelexpo Europe. We look forward to seeing him at the next big trade show, though.
